I've successfully gotten doom3 to work on my amd64 linux machine, but in order to do so, I had to downgrade my kernel to 2.6.7-r14. I've tried using 2.6.8-r[467] but none work. I really need 2.6.8 since that contains ethernet drivers for my Velocity ethernet...
Has anyone figured out more specifically what is wrong with the 2.6.8 series?
For reference:
amd64
Nvidia 5700 Ultra
2G PC2300 RAM
nvidia-kernel-6111
kernel 2.6.8-r[467], 2.6.7-r14 |

I got my first gentoo installation working on my new amd_64 box yesterday, though I've used other distributions for almost a decade. So portage is new to me, and I'm wondering about emerging a kernel downgrade. If i do Code: |
# emerge -pv sys-kernel/gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.8-r3
|
it's masked as unusable in any system (if I understand the syntax). But a kernel downgrade is no big deal. On the other hand, I like the portage system and don't want to run off willy-nilly and compile my own kernel and break the tree. I like the idea of not having to compile my own kernels any more; I have more important things to do. Can someone post succinct portage kernel downgrade instructions?
I'll learn the details as I go, but, damn, I wanna play doom! |
