after some work i was able to run freeNX Server on my machine (gentoo; Kernel 2.6.8.1; audigy2) and the noMachine Client on one win98 and one Mandrake 9.1 machine, everything works fine (the linux <-> linux conection seems to be smoother ) except multimedia support
i followed the "howto" on the noMachnine Hompage but it won't work
the remote Mandrake Computer has arts with network support running and the server has arts disabled.
i have enabled arts on the server to, don't work either.
Could this be because i've build up my box with -arts in make.conf or because i'm logged in into the server localy (without arts) or because i've alsa.
*edit*
i closed my local session and after establishing a remote connection with having arts on the server enabled i could hear mp3's startet from the clients on the server, no i've sound, but on the wrong machine _________________ Linux is like a Wigwam - no Gates, no Windows and a Apache inside |

I don't think that multimedia has been implemented yet. This missing feature is kinda funny, the first time someone logged into my NX server, I really freaked when the KDE sounds started play LOL |

hi, I just merged nxserver-freenx 0.6.0 and I get sound, but its from the server's speakers and not from the client's speakers. I read somewhere that someone got it working with ubuntu so it seems it would work with the freenx version. The problem seems to be that Im using alsa and nx wants to use esd in some way.
Anyone got this working? Do I have to add esd useflag to mplayer etc?
edit.
lol, just had to specify esd as output device
mplayer -ao esd myfile.mp3 _________________ - thomasa88 |

As you noticed, sound redirection will only work if apps on the server use ESD output (which means USE=esd on the server).
On the client, you will of course need to check "Enable multimedia support", and if you do not hear anything, check that you have a "nxesd" process.
Starting the client with `aoss nxclient` can help if your client already produces sound (mp3 in the background anyone?): nexd uses OSS and does not like to share the soundcard _________________ Routinely breaking NX, GNUstep, net-ftp, miscellaneous (llvm, filezilla, rdesktop, chromium, ...) packages |
