I haven't seen Mandrake 10, but I can say this:
"Try Mandrake and when you get it working (if you can).. then try your hand at Gentoo.."
You will appreciate some of the crap Gentoo puts you through if you have survived the Mandrake wizard foolishness.

I am a newbie to linux, I mean I have played around with redhat and mandrake a year or 2 ago.. but I didn't know sh@t... then I was introduced to gentoo a few months ago, I now understand the basics and can work quite well with gentoo. I got KDE up with sound, and everything, Gentoo is actually my only OS in my house of 4 computers!
I love how easy it is to upgrade any packages and I don't ever need to go download a whole new release like mandrake/redhat and many other distros. Also, I think the installation process was what taught me all the basics.
However, what I wish for is a stage 4, for people who have already been through the stage1,2,and 3 a few hundred times and just wanna get a system installed and use it. It will be more or less like stage 3 but with very little human interaction. I wish for that because if I can, I would like to use Gentoo for as long as I can, but in the future I might not have time to go through stage 1,2,or even 3. I just wanna pop a CD in, perhaps specify some info that the installer needs to know and have the installer do the rest of the work installing a base bare bone system.
What do you guys think? _________________ Vnl Online

For a newbie I'd suggest to have a look at Ubuntu. |
