|
|
This is driving me crazy!
Using the sk98lin kernel module with 3Com 3c940/3c2000 Gigabit Ethernet adapter. Browsing is slow, upload is slow, some sites take about 10 minutes to load (but some are fine...!?)
My friend has the same kind of problem with his nForce chipset. I've tried disabling IPv6 to no avail.
Thanks in advance - Alex.
Edit: I should add, using Windows and it is fine! Also when I do emerges the wget is pretty much maxing out. However, if I stop a merge and then try to resume it, making wget resume the download, it goes slow as hell (like less than a KB/s). I have to delete the partially downloaded file and start again.

It sounds like a speed/duplex issue. What are you connecting to? Is it possible to force the switch/whatever you are connecting to to 1000 full or 100 full if it isn't a gig device. If that doesn't do it try forcing the host to 1000 or 100/full as well.
Most switches auto negotiate with hosts fairly well but I have had auto negotiate issues with Foundry's connecting to Solaris and Linux(the same switch will neg fine with M$).
You could also try swapping cables for a known good cable. Split pairs can sometimes cause the type of performance you are seeing...works fine at 10Mb but goes to sh!t when you go to 100Mb or higher.
does ifconfig -a show any errors?
I hope some of this helps...flash backs to my days of switch tech support...

Cable's definitely fine - works in Windows with no problems.

OK this is weird (or perhaps not)
The first 14 or so hops to any destination are ... well, fine
After that things start getting dropped.
Doesn't happen in Windows. |

Can't figure this out
Is there some way to check if my card is running at half- or full-duplex?
Thanks - Alex |

Apparently people have had success by changing the duplex mode of their sk98lin drivers. Can't find anything that tells me how to, though. Any ideas?
Thanks - Alex
Edit: I should say, I'm connecting a 1000Mbit NIC to a 100Mbit switch. Maybe I need to give it a knock and tell it to run at 100Mbit... somehow... |

Hi trooper_ryan, thank you for your help.
I am using gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.9-r1 (Kernel 2.6.9).
I have try to add the fowloing line to my /etc/sysctl.conf,
but my ftp speed still low ( 20-30KB avaraged).
Code: |
net.ipv4.tcp_fin_timeout = 30
net.ipv4.tcp_keepalive_time = 1800
net.ipv4.tcp_window_scaling = 0
|
I just see that my co-lo server can run bittorrent client with speed over 2MB/s, but upload speep very slow (10KB/s) ![Crying or Very sad :cry:](images/smiles/icon_cry.gif) |

Thanks a lot trooper_ryan! I'm so glad that's cleared up!
JORUNO: maybe it is a router between your client and your ftp server that is "broken"? |
