I looked at gtkdiskfree, which my linux partition /dev/hda3 has the capacity of 18 gb and used part is 15 gb... Question is how can I get information about which folders use how much space? In other words, I never expected that much disk usage since I only have 4-5 gb's music or maybe less, so isn't 10 gb too much for a system?

Thanks...

PS: Sorry for my English!

Check your /usr/portage/distfiles directory. This is the directory to where source files are downloading and it can easily eat up a few gigs if you're not paying attention.

Also, the /var/log/ directory can fill up quickly with logs, especially if you run several network services. Look into log rotating, the "art" of archiving old logs to make room for new ones. ;)
This is also one of the reasons having a separate partition for /var is generally considered a good idea.

If you run printers and/or a mail server, other directories like /var/spool can also fill up a lot.

Thanks Hakan,

It must be safe to delete those files in /usr/portage/distfiles right? Because there are tons of tar.bz2's in that folder :)
In a few days I had to reinstall gentoo due to partition problems, should I make a different partition for /var... I don't want to create lots of partitions, but if creating a place for /var should increase systems performance and stability, I could make a partition for /var...

Thanks again :)

Code:
# du -lhs
gives you the disk usage of a directory, try 'man du' to get more info. That can be of course very annoying after a while.
A nice program to get a graphical impression which directories use the most space on your disk: filelight, which is also in portage.
The backdraw of this one is that it requires the qt libs (kde app).
I recently heard about a (rather old) frontend for du, called xdu. It's not as pretty as filelight, but still working.

EDIT: xdiskusage is an enhanced version of xdu, which requires the fltk libs. Unlike xdu, it's also in portage :)

Thanks for the suggestions but what happens if I delete files in /usr/portage/distfiles?

You can safely delete those. If they are needed they will be downloaded again.

Thanks.... was looking for a decent graphical utility myself. Searches in the package database online for "disk space/usage" didn't show this one, and neither kdiskspace nor xdiskspace will compile on this machine :(
