I just compiled a gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.8-r8 kernel using the exact same config as my current r6 flavour and on rebooting the kernel cannot load any modules at all (not from modules.autoload nor things like alsa which I have built as modules and don't need to add to autoload), and spews a few million lines of errors (potential overstatement on the number of error messages). I then recompiled my r6 kernel again to make sure that the other updates to my system are not to blame and that kernel works fine.

Finally I come here expecting to see a hundred threads on every board complaining about it, but I see none. Is it just me?

have you tried re-emerging module init tools?

I know this helps me sometimes when this situation occurs.

I had the same problem with r9 too, but I found out what was going on. I undid the init script changes I made from the Flying with gentoo topic and everything was fine.
