Hi,
This might be a rather strange question, but I don't find any complete guide/tutorial about this. I did some searching but maybe I am searching on the wrong keywords.
Is there some guide out there that gives a good explanation about all different filesystems, their usage, and how big one should make these filesystems.
for instance: /boot, /var, /opt, /usr, .... What are these exactly used for, how do I know how large I should make them, ...
Basically I am looking for a guide that explains what the system folders are in Gentoo (or Linux in general) and what they are used for. _________________ "Don't take life to seriously, you'll never get out of it alive!" |

There are no folders, there are directories. ;>
You might want to take a look at this page, or review the standard-specs itself. _________________ Free Software. Free Sociecty. Better Lives. |

/boot almost certainly doesn't need to be more than 50MB, everything else you'll probably want to put on your main (root) partition, and so each dir won't have it's own maximum size, though in theory you could separate different dirs onto different partitions. The amount of space that you'd need for each one varies depending on what tasks you use your computer for though, so it's not really something I'd recommend if you don't have a really good idea of what your doing (except for maybe /home) _________________ the forums.gentoo.org poster formally known as metal leper |
