|
|
Hi all...
xorg is driving me crazy. I'm using xorg-6.7.0-r1 with ati-drivers-3.9.0-r1. When starting certain applications like valknut my xorg server will just crash, dropping back to a console until it's restarted.
This also happens as soon as I type
in kdevelop - everything is fine until I type the last " - then the server simply crashes. This didn't happen just one or two times, but every single time I'm trying it .
xorg's log doesn't have too much to say about that:
Code: | *** If unresolved symbols were reported above, they might not
*** be the reason for the server aborting.
Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting |
Any ideas what could be causing this?
TIA,
rainer |

Do some troubleshooting. Try the latest ati-drivers. Try the open-source ati driver instead. etc.. |

Hm, thank you for your tips, but I'm running out of options that I know of... I tried emerging the latest ATI drivers although I wanted to avoid them since I read in here that they break a lot of stuff compared to the older ones, but it didn't change anything. If it's at all possible I'd like to stay away from the xorg radeon driver since it's got no acceleration at all afaik?
Any more tips what to try? |

Try the xorg radeon driver -- you're partially right, it has no 3D acceleration. But the point isn't to keep using it forever; the point is to determine whether your problem is specific to the fglrx driver. |

Thanks for your tip regarding the open source radeon driver, with it I finally got everything to work like it should: neither valknut nor eclipse or gkrellm now cause xorg to get a signal 11.
So I guess that leaves me with nothing but "f*ck ATI"? |

you could try downgrading the ati drivers to a lower version (grab an ebuild from gentoo's cvs from the front page if they are no longer in portage). i had a big problem with signal 11s myself, using nvidia, but those were solved when i built the nvidia module against the current kernel tree. _________________ Nitrogen - GtkMM based background setter/restorer, please test!

You can file a bug at bugs.gentoo.org, and we'll see what we can do about it. |
