Seriously, you download them. They are not in the box.

Oops! I had googled for it, and found lots of information on the demo version. I guess I skimmed over too quickly, because I didn't see the part about copying the info from your Win32 install disks to the demo install. The section I needed was "Patch Installation Instructions" which I ignored because I thought they were bug fixes or something.

Logging in with "failsafe terminal" instead of gnome, kde, etc. also makes games run enormously faster.

You don't have any windowmanger, scripts etc. loaded - but for games you won't need it.

What do you mean with failsave terminal ?

In other words: Would i gain performance if i fire up xdm as a window manager instead of kdm?

For me it is a GREAT performance-boost on a p4, 3Ghz, 756mb and GeforceFX5200 (64mb).

NVIDIA cards, it's right up there. ATI, it sucks. Royally. I had to drop from 1280x1024 High Detail all settings on (which won't even RUN anymore on the ATI drivers - It Segfaults out) to 1152x864 Medium Detail most settings off. I'm not particularly happy about that.

Not to be a linux whore, but I play Doom 3 in linux at Ultra and with 16X AA. In windows, I play on High. By the way, both are ~30-60 Fps consistently, but it does lag in some situations, point is, in both conditions it's playable and detail wise, I see no real difference. :(

i get ~1% worse performance in gentoo with high quality @ 1280 x 1024 AA 2x
but if i push it further, on gentoo the boost goes to about + 10% at 1600x1200 AA 2x

there is a problem with the nvidia drivers tho: if i leave the aa and aniso levels application controlled, doom or quake (no sound there) remain with antialiasing turned off regardless of what i set in doom. the only way to change antialiasing is through nvidia-settings.

divided with 1024 (for example if the number is 128, the x would be
16384). You can also set bilinear texture filtering by typing in
seta image_filter GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_NEAREST. You probably won't want
to type in these setting every time you restart Doom III, so the
wisest thing is to create a configurational file. Type in all these
setting (each one in its own line) and save them as autoexec.cfg in
the Doom III\Base directory.

ok, just in case anyone doesnt want to go through and change everything themselves. This is a fair compramise between gfx and performance, the only things that it takes away that I would argue are key parts are the decals, brass, doublevision, playershadow, and skipping the new ambient (disables col glass effect and really really freakin schweet bling bling heat wave fx on rocket explosions, etc). However the skip new ambient can make an incredible difference when ur in a room with a lot of glass in it. These optimizations gave me a 20 fps boost, went from 35-40 to 60-63 in timedemo 1, also buying a new mobo (nf7-s2) gave me 10 more fps. Now because of the new mobo I'd like some help on what to do. I use 3 512 ddr400 stix, but I heard from someone that I am "neutering my computer" by disabling a special optimisation whn there are only 2 stix of ram on the nf7-s2. Do you think that it would increase performance greatly if I sacrafices 512 megs of ram to get whatever that extra optimization is?

OK can someone please help me clarify some stuff

1) I heard somewhere that linux actually uses higher quality testures in Ultra mode, is this correct ?
3) Has anyone noticed that AMD64 based systems seem to perform whay worse in linux.
2) SSE2 optimisation are not in the linux binaries , correct ? will they be soon?

also we recently tried installing and running Doom3 on a Toshiba laptop - pentiumm 2.8 Ghz , nvidia mx 440, it definately runs faster in Linux, I might be able tog et bench results

And Finally... If it performes better in linux, why then are the linux minium requirements so much lower on the box.

btw, that wine comparison vs native, was one of the dumbest things ever posted on these forums.

The higher end graphics card see a huge difference in Windows and Linux, the difference being to Window's advantage. Middle end graphics cards see almost identical performance in both.

An interesting note to my comment is that while my ATI card (9600 Pro) IS a lot slower than it is in Windows, but yet Doom3 has hardly any difference (runs at same settings and resolution as Windows)

Actually its a good tool for comparing where the WINE/Cedega Projects are at in comparison to native games or Windows games.
