I didn't log down what happened at the end of emerging glibc-2.3.4-0808-r1, but i know something did wrong a little wrong, but generally was a success..

I'll go back in time and tell you what I did and why...

I started out with glibc-2.3.4-20040923/2, only to find that it doesn't work with programs like hlds, and others reported teamspeak as it seem to have issues with libNoVersion.so.1. So it's a bug I suppose.

After knowing it doesnt work, i set package.mask/unmask to install glibc-2.3.4-20040808-r1, which works.

Every new version, I test hoping for things to be fixed, then revert back if I have to.

This time, after emerging glibc-2.3.4-20041006, finding it still has that problem, then switching back to 0808-r1, this started:

ls -l /
drwxr-xr-x 2 0 0 4.0K Oct 12 08:37 bin/
drwxr-xr-x 2 0 0 4.0K Oct 12 08:37 boot/
drwxr-xr-x 16 0 0 0 Oct 14 12:02 dev/
drwxr-xr-x 55 0 0 4.0K Oct 14 12:02 etc/
lrwxrwxrwx 1 0 0 11 Oct 6 13:40 games -> /opt/games/
drwxr-xr-x 5 0 0 50 Oct 4 17:29 home/
drwxr-xr-x 10 0 0 8.0K Oct 13 17:26 lib/
drwxr-xr-x 4 0 0 43 Jul 15 03:09 mnt/
drwxr-xr-x 3 0 0 30 Oct 6 13:40 opt/
dr-xr-xr-x 66 0 0 0 Oct 14 12:01 proc/
lrwxrwxrwx 1 0 0 9 Oct 4 17:29 rix -> /home/rix/
drwx------ 7 0 0 4.0K Oct 14 02:16 root/
drwxr-xr-x 2 0 0 4.0K Oct 13 17:26 sbin/
drwxr-xr-x 9 0 0 0 Oct 14 12:01 sys/
drwxrwxrwt 7 0 0 115 Oct 14 12:02 tmp/
drwxr-xr-x 13 0 0 4.0K Oct 12 08:37 usr/
drwxr-xr-x 15 0 0 4.0K Oct 11 01:24 var/

[/lib] -> groups
0 1 2 3 4 6 10 11 20 26 27

take a look at ownership, its the same for ALL...

so i decided to reboot.. only to find lots of weird errors, as expected.. and since it only started after emerging glibc, im sure its glibc problem.

I'll get stuff like this, well there are 2-3 error lines only..
./usr/sbin/proftpd: symbol lookup error: /lib/libnss_files.so.2: undefined symbol: _nss_files_parse_protent, version GLIBC_PRIVATE

Now, I don't expect much from this system anymore, I'm probably gonna format it, but to backup this way, I'm not very sure if it'll even work properly...

It's best if someone tell me how to manually fix this.

Also, suggesting reemerging glibc, of course i've thought of that.. just that

[~] -> emerge -p glibc
portage initialization: your system doesn't have a 'wheel' group.
Please fix this as it is a normal system requirement. 'wheel' is GID 10
'emerge baselayout' and an 'etc-update' should remedy this problem.

portage: 'portage' user or group missing. Please update baselayout
and merge portage user(250) and group(250) into your passwd
and group files. Non-root compilation is disabled until then.
Also note that non-root/wheel users will need to be added to
the portage group to do portage commands.

For the defaults, line 1 goes into passwd, and 2 into group.
portage:x:250:250:portage:/var/tmp/portage:/bin/false
portage::250:portage

As you can see... everything is wrong..

ALSO, /etc/groups /etc/passwd, all seem unaltered... so i think that isnt the issue.

PLEASE someone, some expert, tell me what I can do to at least have names instead of numbers.
