Hi everyone-

I've spent the last three days trying to get ALSA working on my system (AMD64 3200+ w/ an Asus K8V motherboard and Sound Blaster Live Video card) but to no avail. Originally I had the emu10k1 driver enabled in the kernel. With that as the case, I was able to follow all the steps in the gentoo ALSA howto, right up to the point where I was supposed to be able to play sound (unmuting channels, etc) There was, unfortunately, no sound to be found. I even looked at it with alsamixer to make sure I wasn't missing anything. So, I then decided to recompile my kernel and keep the drivers as modules. That was I can use alsaconf, and hope it works. I recompiled and still it's not working. I'm running the 2.6.8-gentoo-r4 kernel.

Here is my dmesg. Note that in the ALSA device list it says "no soundcards found":

Hi :)

All of your modules seem to have loaded fine. I think your problem is with /etc/modules.d/alsa. Please take a closer look on the 3rd point of Gentoo Linux ALSA Guide, especially Code Listing 3.1

You should add this line to your /etc/modules.d/alsa:
Quote:
alias snd-card-0 snd-emu10k1

I see you don't have OSS emulation modules, I believe it would be wise to add them in your kernel configuration beacause there are still many programs that use OSS and not ALSA. Please remember to add the corresponding OSS lines to /ec/modules.d/alsa ;)

I hope that helps.

Regards,
Crocodil.

Thanks for the help, but the line of code you referenced was adeed in by alsaconf. It's the third line from the bottom. Does it matter where it is in the file maybe?

As for OSS emulation, I built them into the kernel, not as modules.

Thanks for your help though. Hopefully, I can get this solved.
