Hi everybody,
I'm trying to install gentoo-1.4rc1 from a livecd.
I choose stage1, because I've already intstalled a 1.2 (now upgraded to 1.4 and gcc-3.2) with a stage2.
My problem is that I can't complete bootstrap.sh because of gcc compilation fail.

/var/tmp/portage/gcc-3.2-r4/work/gcc-3.2/gcc/recog.c: in function 'peephole2_optimize'
/var/tmp/portage/gcc-3.2-r4/work/gcc-3.2/gcc/recog.c: internal error: segmentation fault

My box is a dual celeron 366@550.
I tried some settings, first with more optimization now with less, but no luck.

from my /etc/make.conf

CFLAGS="-mcpu=686 -O2"
MAKEOPTS="-j1" #found in a post on the forum

Any hint?
Thank you very much

Dual celeron? Use -j3 instead.

The -j options to make won't fix the problem, that will just spawn more
child gcc compiler processes. Chances, it's hardware related as has been
detailed in other threads on these boards. You might want to try removing
your over-clocking and see if the compile works.

Are you overclocking your Celerons from 336 to 550? If so set it back to 336.

Put cpu back to 3656 and everything went fine (but slow...).
Now that I emerged system I'll try to compile stuff at 550 mhz.
Tha strange thing was that gcc compilation failed always at the same point...

Try to compil gcc-3.2.1 !

I've spent a lot of time to try installing Gentoo 1.4rc1 on my computer. The gcc compilation was the problem, and when I've switched to gcc 3.2.1 everything goes well !
