Hello!
For my home network, I've a gentoo server with both smb and nfs. My problem is when I make a copy to the server from my laptop (gentoo as well) the rights are changed to 777 and owner to root. I can delete/rename/move,etc the file, but it's impossible to "chmod". And this for both smb or nfs. I use a Fat32 partition an the server.
Thanks! |

Well, the fat fs doesn't have uid or guid, so it will be mounted under the root's ownership Absolutely NOTHING you can do about... If you are exporting the files over smb/nfs/whatever, why did you chose fat(32)? It really doesn't matter for the client machine, but for the server, yes.
[EDIT]
BTW, this problem is not specific to nfs/smb/etc. Just try to create a file (being logged on the server) on the fat partition and check the ownership. |

Thanks you for your responce. I thought that was the problem. Anybody know if it's possible to convert fat32 to any linux file system (reiserfs or xfs if possible) without format and lost all data? I think not but it cost nothing to ask |

I don't know of any program that can do this trick Sorry... And I would question the utility of such a program... Maybe other people disagree... |

Yes, of course, the utility of such program are not very important. So I've done "mkreiserfs".
But know, when I copy something to my home server, the owner is changed to "ftp". For sur, it's normal because my name is not on the server. But, can I simply "adduser" with my name on the server? |

The numeric userid must be the same for you to see the same text both places. So you'll have to add a new user with a specific numeric userid. |

If this is so, then the process is a little bit different. If you connect using an anonymous account, the files are created with a default user ownership, usually 'ftp' (as this is the account the server runs from). But you can create a user on the server (with adduser, as you previously stated) and use this user to login. You will be in your home dir and the ownership will be yours. |
