Is it better on resources? What are the benefits of switching other then the license. I have been avoiding dealing with this for a while and I am now starting to wonder if switching would be beneficial.

afaik, Xfree86 is deprecated in gentoo, because of the license. This means that versions after the cutoff version will no longer be put in portage. this does not prevent you from installing your own super-special downloaded version of Xfree...but I certainly wouldn't attempt it!!!

Xorg, in my experience, is pretty darned fast, and sporadically supports things like transparency, xdamage redraws (instead of drawing an entire moved window, the server just repairs damaged portions, like Windows gui does.)

but, as always, it's up to you.
