I already have a working and installed system with /home, /tmp, etc. on the root partition. Is there away to move them to another partition/drive? I tried copying the directory to another location. Then mounting the partition and moving the files back. When I started kde and other apps they gave all sorts of errors. I ran
Code:
chmod 1777 /mnt/gentoo/tmp
like it said in the install hand book, it helped a few things but portage still had errors. Like normal I’m probably missing something obvious.

If you cp -aR the files from /home and /tmp to their new partitions, mount the partitions at the correct place, and make sure the directory permissions/owner/group are correct, you should be fine (assuming nothing is actively using files there).

Once everything is working fine for a bit and the new locations are in fstab, you could umount them and delete the contents of /home and /tmp on the root partition which are probably still wasting space.

(if /tmp had the correct permissions, what error was portage giving?)
