I want to get some skins for xmms. I know there is RPM packages but I can't
find one in *.tar.gz.
I tried emerge -s xmms but I found nothing either.
Thanks. |

xmms skins are the same as winamp skins so you can get them from winamp.com
The skin files go in this directory, create it if it doesn't exist:
/usr/share/xmms/Skins |

you can also find a bunch at the xmms website
http://xmms.org/skins.html
they can also go in ~/.xmms/Skins in their compressed form (gz, zip, etc) _________________ magoo |

Or you could put skins in ~/.xmms/Skins. Thats what I'll use as I don't have write access to /usr as a normal user. |

OK, so what's the secret to using a skin? I've downloaded it and put it into ~/.xmms/Skins. I can see it when I use the skin option, but it won't let me select it. Very odd. |

I had this problem too and the only solution I found is that the skinz
are packed without a foldername in their path.
You have to unpack them and store the files in their own folder.
(in the xmms/Skins folder of course... ) |

To get skins to work:
make sure they are either zip or gz files - winamp .wsz files are zip files so just rename them. Make sure you have read permission on them as a user too - this may not be the case if you copy them to /usr/share/xmms/Skins as root.
HTH(it worked for me!) |

Weirdest thing... none of your tips helped... sort of . After making a dir for the theme and renaming the file to .zip and unzipping, it still didn't work. I can't use the mouse to select themes. What I have to do is use the tab key, arrow keys and space bar to select the theme and close the window. Then shutdown xmms (mouse works here) and restart xmms to get it to show the new theme. This is the first problem I've had with a mouse, and I don't think its a mouse issue. Unfortunately the fonts and options (OAIDV) are too small in xmms. If I make it large, then everything is pixelated. Just seems a bit buggy for my liking (becoming a theme for apps i use ). |

weird..never seen a problem like that. have you tried removing and then re-emerging xmms?
i have no clue what could be causing that mouse issue. can you use the mouse to select other parts of xmms or is it just for the skin window that you have the problem? _________________ (rob) |

Really, get the k-jofol plugin, and use k-jofol plugins. Way, way nicer than winamp stuff. |

It's a plugin for Noatun which is the kde multimedia player, it's fancier looking but that's about it. XMMS has drag n drop support in KDE but kde's multimedia player noatun doesn't. XMMS has plugins to play all your videos like avi's/mpegs etc which also works with drag n drop, noatun doesn't (as far as I know).
I imagine it's in kdemultimedia if you ever want to subject yourself to it though. |

For now I'm using Gnome. Until KDE speeds up and fixes some bugs, I'll pass. |

Uh, I didn't know about the KDE thing. The kjofol plugin I use is from this sitehttp://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~timf/xmms.html. It explains it better than I could too. Again, I don't do KDE or GNOME, aside from a couple apps, not the whole desktop thing that I don't understand. I think that you can get the rpm and install it no deps, but don't quote me on that. |

I liked this plugin very much, so I wrote an ebuild for it. Could you guys check this out and see if it works. I will submit it then after some testing.
Create a dir like x11-themes/xmms-kjofol
Save this code as xmms-kjofol-0.95.ebuild in there.
Code: |
# Copyright 2002
# Distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License, v2 or later
S=${WORKDIR}/xmms-kj/
DESCRIPTION="A xmms remote that allows users to use K-Jofol skins"
SRC_URI="http://www.dgs.monash.edu.au/~timf/kint_xmms-${PV}.tar.gz"
HOMEPAGE="http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~timf/xmms.html"
DEPEND=">=media-sound/xmms-1.2.7"
src_compile() {
emake || die
}
src_install() {
dobin kj
dodir /usr/share/xmms/kjofol
cp *.zip ${D}usr/share/xmms/kjofol
dodoc readme.txt COPYING
}
pkg_postinst() {
echo 'This plugin works as a remote for XMMS. Start XMMS before'
echo 'using this plugin with kj'
echo 'Place K-Jofol skins in ~/.xmms/kjofol/'
}
|
Create the subdir x11-themes/xmms-kjofol/files and save this file as: digest-xmms-kjofol-0.95
Code: |
MD5 60cdb4e1bbc8d121c99da2f4d00813c2 kint_xmms-0.95.tar.gz 56739
