yes, clicking on the image icon should bring the program back up; this works flawlessly for me, but I'm using enlightenment (DR16.7.1). Does right-click bring up a small menu on the bar? Does left click do anything at all? Also, what DE/WM are you using nsahoo?

Yes, I know this will work, but it will also get rid of the shadow of my panel and that is something I dont want ;)

I guess i'll have to wait for composite support for engage/e17

I noticed that I have to hold down the left mouse button down a little bit longer than "a normal click" to bring programs back to the forefground

Gotta hold the mouse button down for a bit, it's tricky at first, but makes sense afterwards.

Ah, i guess I just do it automatically. The feel is just like that on a Mac with OSX. I'm not sure if it's possible to configure this or not, but my guess would be it can at least be configured from the theme level.

Some other things:

I like the auto-hide function. But when I enable it, the docker moves to the center of my dual screen setup (xinerama), which essentially makes the docker appear a little bit on both screens. When I don't enable the auto-hide funtion, it just shows on the left screen. Somebody knows if it's possible to have engage only on the left screen while auto-hide is enabled?

Also, when, options.grab_min_icons and options.grab_app_icons are enabled, engage will automatically grab (ugly) icons for each application, but the customs *.eet icons are never used. Does somebody know if it is possible to let engage first check if there is a custom *.eet icon available, and only if it doesn't find one, make an automatic icon?

TIP: You can have a nice clock in your engage. See this file in engage cvs. Necessary file are also to be found in e cvs.

i dont believe you can have it get the default icons when set to custom themes, but that would make a good request

I've installed Engage through portage. I had a problem that was mentioned here:

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=174279&start=150

(I was getting the following error:
Quote:
You should _really_ create /home/derm/.e/apps/engage/mapping and populate it
You should _really_ create /home/derm/.e/apps/engage/launcher and populate it

)

I made those directories and then the error went away. As it turns out, you need to download 'build_icon.sh' from the cvs pages (linked above) and run give it each icon you want, one by one. That gives you some icons. (I'm not familiar with shell scripts so I don't know how to pass it "The GIMP" as a variable so that it will recognize it as also needing the Gimp icon...)

I still have one problem, however. Well, two actually. One is that I get that funky shadow that other people were complaining about and the second thing is that whenever I right click on the bar and click on "Configuration", I get the following output in my console:

Quote:
/bin/sh: line 1: examine: command not found

Anyone have any ideas?

To add other icons with build_icons.sh you simply type for instance:

Code:

# ./build_icon.sh Firefox /usr/bin/firefox Firefox-bin Firefox /usr/share/pixmaps/firefox-icon.png

From the Faq:
Quote:

Q: How do I know what arguments to use for the build_icon.sh?
A: Easy :
1) Application title - the text you wish to appear above the icon
2) Command - the command used to start (or spawn another instance of) the app
i.e. "mozilla" or "Eterm --borderless"
3) Window class }
4) Window name } If you do not know these values go to the "remember" settin$

And to use the configuration of engage you have to install examine:

Code:

# esearch examine

*  app-misc/examine [ Masked ]
      Latest version available: 0.0.1.20041016
Latest version installed: [ Not Installed ]
Size of downloaded files: 1,024 kB

I'm on the amd64 platform and I use fluxbox. I emerged engage and it works when i run 'engage' but there's absolutely no help included besides the terse engage --help. 'examine engage' didn't work so i emerged examine. once i did that, 'examine engage' returns an error:

Code:

brian@newcastle brian $ examine engage
examine: connect to engage failed: -5

If engage is running though, I can however right click and click 'configure' and it does run examine for it. the interface, however, is INSANELY buggy and takes like 15 tries to type a number in one of the text boxes.

When i run engage from a terminal, I get this information:

Code:

You should _really_ create /home/brian/.e/apps/engage/mapping and populate it
You should _really_ create /home/brian/.e/apps/engage/launcher and populate it

but I go there and there's nothing and there's no help on google and the examine program for engage has no options for adding buttons.

In addition, I get some weird bugs when trying to use engage regularly with the default question mark icons and launching new programs while it's running.

some times if i open up gaim and sign on when engage is running, it seg faults immediately and gives me an error like:
(can't reproduce atm so going to paraphrase)
Code:

Application handle already freed!
BAD PROGRAMMER BAD PROGRAMMER
Go fix your code!

most of the time when i launch apps, it only adds icons for every few programs and when i click on an icon representing a running program, i have to do a slow mousedown before mouseup to get focus on the program represented by the icon :/

All of this is pretty disappointing because I can tell that this app has some potential.

Maybe we can figure out together how to get engage running more reliably.

To run examine on an app, you must have that app running already, at least that is my experience.

The documentation for these unsupported keyworded apps is in CVS, or at least in the package you install from - try extracting that and reading README or INSTALL or FAQ ;)

I did not know there was so many. I tried gdesklet before but found it to be very slow and unpleasant. Engage is fast, slick and efficient. I have absolutely no envie to try anything else, now that I've been spoiled with Engage. Add a vote from me.

I don't want to use kiba-dock or avant-window-navigator, because of I have to enable compiz and it will break down my system sometimes.

Besides that, is there a simple way to make a simple icon panel such as AWN?

I found a screensnap:

http://www.gentoo.org/images/shots/Bildschirmfoto.png

Is it a real panel? How to make it?

Thanks,
Evan

I don't think kooldock requires composite support. I've been running it for a while and it works greak.

I tried to figure out how to install engage, but I decided that if the instructions are so difficult to find that it's probably not well-supported in Gentoo anyway.

I'm using avant-window-navigator, and it works nicely. Plus I didn't need any overlays or anything, just to add it to my /etc/portage/package.keywords file.

Still, I am definitely interested if anyone finds anything better that is actually in portage.
