The most unusual hardware?

Some years ago I played around with Minix on a Toshiba T2000SXe.
(386SX-20, 2MB RAM, 40MB HDD)

I have mantain operative until 2005 (due to a strange necessity of data retain) my old NCR-Tower 32/800 (no way to run linux or bsd kernel on it).
I am in search of the nic and of another copy of the c compiler (the stream tape is damaged) to try to use the portage on it.
Just to see "SYSTEM" come back.

@Carnildo: on the power mac you will be never able to run start direcly a linux or bsd kernel, I remeber you must run a bootX (or something similar) program from the running mac os and start from it the kernel. In fact you must ever have the mac os installed. Even if the hardware (especially the network and the video card) is supported and the system is not damaged (I have installed yellowdog on a G2 once in a far past).
Sure than all the needed hardware and partition types support is built in in the kernel?

The most strange hardware is the first computer I have used (the mainframe of my dads office) an ncr 8200 or the successive 9100 it was a nightmare only to start (power on, press in the order reset, insert the floppy with boot, press load, wait some seconds and press run etc.) or the "pc" (ever an ncr, dmv a stranbge thing with a z80, an intel 8088 and a motorola cpu, i must have one more in the garage).
Or the damned crappy bastard of line printer in the public administration where i work sometimes as tax consultant...

Gentoo on IBM Netvista. Little Cyrix 200 mHz or something, 128 MB of ram. I used to use it as a print server, but then I got an x86_64 box.

In the past I ran Gentoo on a PC with a 180MHz intel PentiumPro CPU.
Now I use ocasionaly an SGI Octane with an R10000.

Well not the same thing or as cool, but, remember, the machines you can't run Linux on can probably be utilized as a serial terminal. To this end, I have an Apple //e I use semi-frequently for a variety of things in nice green phosphor:

Nothing overly exotic, but I am running linux on a HP Jornada 690 as a server (ssh, ftp and such). It's not gentoo though, but a dedicated distribution called jlime, so all the hard porting work wasn't done by me.

ran xbox sources for a while, now run gentoo sources with xbox patches so i could add webcams to it.

runs apache, ssh, ftp, hellanzb, samba and most recently is a shoutcast server, no X but who needs that?

I don't suppose there is anythign unusual about the hardware, but it still deserves a mention

For those of you who said they couldn't get Gentoo to run on their Power G3 Macs, I've got Mac OS 9.2.2, Mac OS X 10.4 *and* Gentoo 2010 booting perfectly on an iMac G3 (Summer 2001). It can be done! In fact I am working on adding KMS to the r128 driver and that should be available within the next few months.

Better late than never: @ddc: Well. it's slowish, but it works fine for small server daemons like ssh & friends. Jlime also provides X (via the framebuffer if I am not mistaken), but there's not much you can really do with it, RAM is a serious limitation.

I've had MkLinux running on a PPC-based mac, back when MkLinux was alpha, and beta.

I ran "BlueHat" on a 4-cpu RS-6000 and a 2-cpu AS-400 back when I worked at IBM. Both machines were PPC-based. BlueHat was an unofficial name for an internally modified RedHat, basically enough to get it working on the IBM hardware. That was when IBM started supporting Linux on everything, and by the time I got my hands on it they had already made the announcement, so it was real easy to set up. BTW IBM hardware runs SetiAtHome REALLY fast, and without any significant degradation of production performance. I used a dual processor intel box as a reference, also running Linux. The RS-6000 was easily 16 times faster at the SetiAtHome benchmark. Don't remember what the intel chip was though. It was all fairly current stuff right around the time RedHat went public.

Not Linux, but I had a Mac SE-30 with AUX (Apple's commercial UNIX) on it. Totally useless but wildly expensive.
