Hey guys,
I have an interesting one for you today. I've been developing for the Eken m001 tablet, and you can refer to my work here: http://slatedroid.blitzwerks.co.uk/index.php?board=6.0
Basically, I've been working with Android, but I've felt that running Android on this device (300Mhz WM8050 ARM processor, 128MB RAM) is a bit much. After seeing that somebody got Debian running with Android's kernel, I asked myself why can't I do the same with Gentoo, being as it's based on Debian? http://slatedroid.blitzwerks.co.uk/index.php?topic=152.0
Here's the thing. This device is strictly a touchpanel tablet device. It doesn't have external USB, but on the inside it has what appears to be an internal USB header, visible in this thread: http://groups.google.com/group/ekenm001/web/aimless-teardown-pics
This USB header is used to connect the devices wireless module. I thought that if I can desolder that header and add a regular female USB connector, I can connect a keyboard and work with Debian. However, if I can I'd like to avoid that. Doesn't mean I won't, but please keep this in mind for the sake of not tearing up the unit if possible.
My first question is if there's a way to get sshd going at boot using what's supplied in the above thread to allow me to ssh into the tablet. The next obvious thing to ask is if there's a way in Debian to automatically modprobe the provided wireless module and automatically connect to any open wireless network in the area, provided there's an open unsecured network to connect to, strictly for the purpose of initial development, much like how in Gentoo I would rc-update add net.wlan0 default.
If I can get those two things to happen, I can ssh into the tablet and start doing what I'd like to be able to do, and that's get portage installed into this base Debian install on the SD card. From there it should be a matter of just emerging gentoo's base or just partitioning the card or something and starting a new Gentoo ARM installation, right?
Here's the post for the default Android update script for the device: http://darexiunism.com/Darexius.zip
Initially this will take someone with more knowledge than I have to help me with, as I have no idea how I'd go about getting that initial setup going to allow me to ssh into this device.
EDIT:
Thinking about it, can't I install Gentoo into the 2GB NAND and then use the SD card for /usr/portage, /home, and /var? |

Not related to your problem/question whatsoever, but: Where do you get that Gentoo is based on Debian? |

you know, let me stand corrected. For whatever reason, I swore I read in Making the Distro or on Wikipedia that Gentoo was based on Debian. I was sadly thinking of Ubuntu, which is largely based on Debian.
Still, same principles apply. |
