Hi!
I'm about to by a pcmcia wireless card for my amd64 pc. I've been looking for a while in google and in the gentoo forums but I can't find wich ones work well under linux (2.6.x) and without ndiswrapper (I can't use it because of de lack of 64bit drivers for windows).
I would appreciate if it had the connector for an external aerial.
Thank you very much for your help. |

I use a Lucent Orinoco card, supported by the 2.4 and 2.6 kernel (Hermes chipset). No problems at all, just plug and play. Otherwise you could start by checking what chipsets are mentioned in the Menuconfig and then search for cards using those. |

Short answer:
There are two variants that are widely supported:Lucent/Orinoco WaveLAN cards, and
Harris/Intersil Prism cards. Refer to ...for more information about selecting a specific model.
Long answer:
I recommend reading "Linux Unwired" (O'Reilly Associates, Roger Weeks, Edd Dumbill, Brian Jepson). This book is an absolutely indespensible introduction and refernce volume for anyone who wants to connect their Linux machine to a wireless network. In short order, the authors cover a wide variety of topics (technologies, concepts, protocols, and hardware) in a way that's easy to understand and apply as well as providing a fair amount of reference material (installation and configuration). Also: This book's recent publication date - April, 2004 - means that the information contained therein is up-to-date.
I recommend this book to WLAN-users of any experience-level. _________________ Eric P.
