Here is the error message I am getting when attempting to fdisk the drive:
You will not be able to write the parition table
Device contains neither a valid DOS parition table, nor Sun, SGI or OSF disklabel
Building a new DOS disklabel. Changes will remain in memory only, until you decide to write them. After that, of course, the previous content won't be recoverable.
WARNING: invalid flag 0x0000 of partition table 4 will be correct by write

The drive only shows up as 634MB when using fdisk, but its a 40GB. I can't write to the drive either it says I do not have permissions. I am new to gentoo, but have used other distributions. Not really sure what is going on here. I have tried paritioning and formating the drive several different ways with no sucess. Any ideas of what I am doing wrong????? |

I just showed my newbie skills in action. I wasn't understanding the BASIC linux naming conventions for controllers.
By convention, IDE drives will be given device names /dev/hda to /dev/hdd. The first drive is 'a' the second drive 'b' and so on. For example, /dev/hda is the first drive on the first IDE controller and /dev/hdd is the second drive on the second controller (the fourth IDE drive in the computer).
So essentially I was trying to paritition my Gentoo Universal CD. Boy do I feel Stupid! Sorry for the absent minded post. |
