Try
Code:
lspci
If there is no Ethernet Controller in output, then check out section 3.d. Manual Network Configuration.

most common things i missed when i just installed linux was to load my nic modules at start up. i also , and i cant remember the frigging file in /etc/ atm, forgot to set dhcp or manual, and finally the rc-update portion where you turn on your eth0. if it seems those are up and running the next thing to check i guess would be if the dns nameservers are correct.

well if its dhcp, technically it should be automatic dns resolution. if you have it manually configured your dns servers should be in /etc/resolv.conf

If you ethernet was detected with smp, go with it.

gentoo - 2.4 kernel
smp - 2.6 kernel
