disk 2 problems

I have installed the base install from disk one, and now I have the packages cd up and going. In the instruction manual it states that you need to mount the package directory, and then emerge. There is a quirky little phrase about this directory (if there is one). Well I "aints gots one" So now when I try to run emerge on any of the individual pacakged I get error after it starts to calculate dependencies. Any help on this would be vastly appreciated.
