|

I installed gentoo following the installation guide. Manually configured kernel with minimal settings. After reboot it says:
mount_devfs_fs(): unable to mount devfs, err:-2
...
no init found. Try passing init= option to kernel.
and stops.
What should I do? I am quite a beginner in linux, so I have no clue what all this means.
I also built kernel with use of genkernel. And it works. But it doesn't use the full screen, only about 1/3 of it. However, it shows a linux logo above the active area, so I suppose it has access to the whole screen area. Is there something wrong or I just should keep going like this?
If it can help, here is my laptop configuration:
AMD-AthlonM 2200+, ATI Radeon Mobility, etc. Also it has WinXP installed. |

did you ensure to respect the minimum requirements in the kernel manual config as stated in the handbook... |

I am sure I precisely followed the handbook. But I will double check now. |

Thank you very much.
If interested, my problem was with lilo configuration. instead of route to root I set a route to boot:-) So now it's all ok. But still my second question is valid:
Is there a way to make the initial terminal be shown on the full screen? |

I've tried vga=788 and 792, 791. on boot it says smth like "unsupported (or unrecognized) graphics mode" and gives a choice of several other modes. basically set by (number of lines) x (# of rows). It only stretches or squeezes my fonts, but the working area doesn't change.
I don't set video= argument, since I don't know how:) |

hey fly_away i had the exact same problem, can you tell me how you fixed it?
/boot -> hda1
/ -> hda2
heres my grub.conf
title
root(hd0,0)
kernel /kernel-2.6.8-gentoo-r10 root=/dev/hda1
and i get that error, if i try root=/dev/hda2 i get a different error saying unable to mount root fs.
did a stage1 install.
thanks in advance |

2 remix.
I have linux and windows now, but I couldn't get grub working, so I am just using lilo for now. if you use lilo, just do what the handbook says, and it works. with grub, it doesn't... it boots linux, but doesnt boot windows. I gave up for now, as long as lilo works, it's good enough for me. but I am still fighting with graphics. |
