my hard drive is a fairly new 250gig maxtor here is what it says in hdparm

Quote:

/dev/hda:
multcount = 16 (on)
IO_support = 1 (32-bit)
unmaskirq = 1 (on)
using_dma = 1 (on)
keepsettings = 0 (off)
readonly = 0 (off)
readahead = 256 (on)
geometry = 30515/255/63, sectors = 251000193024, start = 0

and....

Quote:

/dev/hda:
Timing cached reads: 1380 MB in 2.00 seconds = 688.38 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 100 MB in 3.00 seconds = 33.32 MB/sec

These are horrible speeds for an ata 133 hard drive! whats wrong?!

I also have a sata drive. check this out

Quote:

/dev/sda:
HDIO_GET_MULTCOUNT failed: Invalid argument
readonly = 0 (off)
readahead = 256 (on)
geometry = 14593/255/63, sectors = 120034123776, start = 0

/dev/sda:
Timing cached reads: 1552 MB in 2.00 seconds = 775.73 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 158 MB in 3.01 seconds = 52.46 MB/sec

these are burst rates.. not sustained...

the key things for typical drive performance is buffer size, rpm, and seek time... (not necessarily in that order)

remeber that the hdd has different write/reads speeds depending if it's in the begging or the end of an physical disc on your hdd.. a diff on 30mb isn't strange at all.. in the end of the disc you might get 60+mb/s.. but in the begging, "just" 30mb/s.. but hey, 30mb/s isn't that slow either...

I don't really know how hdparm works.. maybe it tries to read in the middle of the disc? but maybe not :)
