Network/Emerge freezes for apparently no reason

Ok. I have posted about this before, gave up and returned to Mandrake. But I LOVE Emerge and Gentoo as a whole so I have come back and am trying again. Here's what I have done to this point.

I got Mandrake up and running fine. eth0 runs w/o a hitch. Nothing goes wrong. Well I installed Gentoo and the problem starts. While building the system it works fine (Still under mandrake). When I boot into it, command line, it retreives the ip address via dhpcd just fine. I can ping out and everything. But after a bit of internet usage, like emerging xorg, it just freezes. It shows no errors.

I NEED help. I'm not the only person that has this problem.

Sys Info:
Gentoo 2004.2 AMD64 Edition
AMD64 3400+
Reaktek 8169 (I think that's the number. It's the 10/100/1000 one)

P.S/Bump: I DO have the R8169 module installed.
