|

Yesterday I updated XPDF from 2.03 to 3.0.
This necessitated emerging media-fonts/gnu-gs-fonts-std-8.11 and updating ghostscript to app-text/ghostscript-7.07.1-r7.
Since then, I have noticed that text was considerably smaller, the selection of fonts available was greatly reduced, text in menu bars in firefox far smaller (see here - it's not very clear but menu bar text should be a lot bigger than that) and OpenOffice prone to crashing.
I've seen such symptoms before - IME, they're indicative of font issues. So I put ghostscript and XPDF back to their previous versions, and unmerged gnu-gs-fonts-std. However, this has not fixed any of the above issues.
Can anyone make any suggestions?[/url] |

I spent much of the afternoon messing around, achieved precisely nothing and shut my machine down.
Rebooted this evening and everything is back to normal!
It seems that either fonts in X suck - or my understanding sucks. Possibly both. Is there any documentation anywhere which explains exactly how fonts in X work without making reference to specific aims a user may have? |
