|
|
I'm trying to install Gentoo (no really) and I get this error: scsi0: Someone reset channel A
The scsi card I have is an Adaptec 2940 UW and I have a 9 gig SCSI HD connected to it, where I was planning on installing Gentoo.
I just tried RedHat 8.0 with the hopes that it might work (hey, don't blame me ), but alas, exactly the same problem (who would have guessed)
Has anyone ever came across this problem and solved it?

yeah, I have that problem. It repeats it for scsi ids 0 through 15 then continues to boot.

It only shows scsi0 and not one time, it sort of loops.
I just don't know what to do with it... |

mine does this:
(like 20 lines of gibberish(to me))
reset message
scsi0:0:0
(5 lines of gibberish)
(like 20 lines of gibberish(to me))
reset message
scsi0:1:0
(5 lines of gibberish)
through
scsi0:15:0
then it finishes booting

The problem was that the error was spamming my screen. Only that error. I've spent 20 minutes watching it, hoping that it would stop (never accuse me of being not patient ), but nope, didn't work.
So now I put that SCSI in even another PCI slot and now Gentoo LiveCD does boot, but as soon as it reached the login prompt and I try to login...
I type in root, hit enter, wait two minutes, and there I get the login prompt again. And that over and over and over...
I'm seriously doubting if I ever can get whatever Linux distro running on my system. |

its an issue with kernel 2.4.18 and some of the pre 2.4.19. I have 2 identical servers which uses the aic7xxx driver. One works the other doesn't but with the final 2.4.19 kernel they both work.. |

So all I have to do is get a Gentoo version with the latest 2.4.19 kernel? Or perhaps even a 2.5 one |

You could use tomsrtbt floppy boot disk to boot your system since it has an aic7xxx driver (that I think works). From there you could use one of the addons to get your network driver loaded, and then you could go right through following the install guide as usual. |

I have a system using 2.4.20 (vanilla) at the moment and no problems at all.
I am using 2 adaptec controller - 1x 2940 uw, 1x 2940 u and have attached 4 scsi-drives (3x uw, 1x u), a cdrom and a cd-writer.
No problem at all. Also had no problems with kernel version 2.4.17 and 2.4.19. Maybe you should check the cables first. Maybe you have wrong termination settings or you just have to move the cables around a bit to remove the errors.

If you're using the Gentoo livecd v1.4, you already have kernel 2.4.19.
I'm assuming you've check for any hardware problems? Correct sync settings for that drive, a good cable that's up to the speed spec you're trying to run the drive at, and proper termination? Is this a LVD setup? If so, you need an active LVD terminator on the end of your cable. |

I have the Adaptec 2940 card in my new mini-ITX system, and it boots fine with the Gentoo 1.4rc1 r2 live CD.

I use an Adaptec 2940 and have had absolutely no probelms with any linux distro previous to, and including Gentoo 1.2 & 1.4
Hardware setup problem I'd guess. |
