Samba won't reconnect after XP machine restart

I have small home network consisting of my Gentoo machine in the living room and an XP machine in the bedroom. We turn off the XP machine at night when we go to sleep, but leave mine on. When I used Slackware, I did an automatic backup of my files to the XP machine everyday, however now that I use Gentoo, I cannot connect to the XP machine as samba drive after I turn that machine back on. I get an input/output error. Any ideas?
