Bootsplash has been deprecated and taken out of the kernel source tree. What you're seeing there is fbsplash, the replacement for bootsplash. It doesn't work for me and I can't even use an initrd anymore so I can't really help you setting it up however you just have to go on the documentation tips & tricks forum, there's a big thread there that explains how to set it up.

The message about not finding a valid RAM disk image is a red herring. I've had it on every kernel that loads an initrd, regardless of whether bootsplash is going or not.

fbsplash is set up somewhat differently to bootspash - from the sounds of it you've got a kernel patched with fbsplash but you've got a bootsplash initrd image. As Lepaca said, have a look for the fbsplash documentation.
