okay, here is my status thus far.

1) i do not have pcmcia compiled into my kernel (gentoo-sources-r9)

2) i load pcmcia_core, my bus driver, and then axnet_cs (from my understanding, this is what the fa411 uses)

3) run cardmgr

4) less /var/log/everything/current | grep cardmgr tells me that cardmgr is detecting the card as a memory device.

5) thus, i cannot start eth0, etc.

<3 ;)

As a quick fix from http://db.cs.berkeley.edu/~aoki/.admin/HOW-TO/ipaq-linux-cards.txt:

Quote:
the FA411 can operate as an NE2000-compatible card, so if you point
it to pcnet_cs instead it will operate more or less correctly. in
fact, however, the FA411 uses the Asix Ax88790 chipset, which is not
100% NE2000-compatible. after a while, the FA411 will spew the
dreaded "eth0: interrupt(s) dropped!" message to console and start
using polled I/O. if you have the axnet_cs driver, it is better to
go ahead and use it - it does 100bT autonegotiation and all that
good stuff as well.

In other words pcnet_cs might get you going for now while it's fixed properly.

I've had loads of grief getting gentoo-sources based kernels to boot on my Tosh Tecra8000 (tried again last night - still no joy- grrr). If PCMCIA modules are in modules.autoload I it hangs on loading ds, otherwise it just fails to display a login prompt.

I admit I haven't really searched around for a fix as the vanilla sources work fine. All I really want from the gentoo-sources is the APM console blanking - I really ought to try patching the vanillas myself (hmm. idea for playing tonight :-))

I'd advise giving the vanilla sources a shot - just to see if they play nicer.

well, everything boots just fine, regardless of the modules that i tell it to use. vanilla-sources doesn't help, either

sorry I can't be more help.

I did finally get my laptop to run with Gentoo sources last night though - yay. Found a fix on the forums wouldn't you know it. I'm a dumbass for not thinking there would be one. I assumed it was just my laptop being a bugger .

thanks for your help. however, i still can't get this thing to work. i am thinking that i may have a problem with the i82365 being used with my setup. i have been lead to believe that the i82365 is not a generic driver, but is more comonly used in modern laptop. however, this archaic......thing.....is anything but modern. ibm thinkpad 240 21u -- intel moderncino (sp?) celeron, 300mhz, 64mb

You need to see if you can dig out the spec of that laptop and find out what PCMCIA controller it's using. A search on goolgle should (hopefully) do it.

Another thing to watch for is the laptop's BIOS. On older Toshiba's for example, you can choose the PCMCIA mode:

PCIC
Cardbus 16Bit
Auto Select

I've found that auto select works best purely and simply 'cos I can't haven't dug into the issue. Your laptop may have something similar and it may be relevant to your problem.

As you've probably noticed, there are two other devices available in your kernel config, TCIC and i82092. One of these might be what you're after.

A suggested Google is: "thinkpad 240 21u linux pcmcia". I haven't tried it (I'm off to bed - bad day) but give it a go. It's likely a generic problem.
