Sorry if this is dumb, I'm not sure how to ask (or search) for this question.
I'd like to be able to select an option in grub.conf (or wherever) and have one load X and another just the cmdline.
Several times with the latest ATI drivers I get X with XDM loading in DEFAULT that locks the system. I then have to go through the chore of chrooting from a livecd to fix the problem. Would be better if I could just restart the system and not start X. |

Why not remove xdm from the default run level and start it manually? Then if it locks up, you just reboot and you're back at a command line.
I have no idea how you'd control xdm getting started or not through grub. |

I like to have xdm loaded by default because I often remote into the box with VNC.
Plus starting X works **most** the time. |
