I've got an Intellinet PCMCIA 10/100 Network Card on my system. I am able to configure it, and have, I've set up all the networking information, and everything works (as a side-note, it everything bout searching for a dynamic IP address worked from the LiveCD) anyway... every time I plug the computer into my network, the switch crashes, and needs restarted. Is there any settings that anybody can think of that would cause the switch to crash... Like I said, from the LiveCD, the switch crashed when a dynamic IP request was asked (doesn't crash from Windows), and now... I've got a static IP set, but every time I plug it into the network, it crashes the network. I know this is very vague... but unfortunately, I don't know where to even begin to look.
Thanks.

I suggest trying a different driver, looking at newer kernels to see if they have anything. Try turning off autodetection of the link speed to see if that helps too. Or maybe even better: buy a new switch |

Hmmm so if you plug a windows machine into the same switch and boot up it doesnt crash it? _________________ The realOTW: http://forums.realotw.org/index.php

Is the switch hot? I once had a hub which would sometimes overheat and stop working. Could that be it? |

ok, although it crashes the switch, that's not the only strange thing... I took it out of our network, and plugged it into a small 5 port hub, and plugged my other computer into the hub... still no change... another thing... what does net-setup do? when I use that program (from the boot CD) it works, any other way of setting up the network (From the boot disk or otherwise fails).
when I check ifconfig, it shows that the eth0 is active, but can't ping my other computer (and other computer can't ping the laptop) the card is an Intellinet PCMCIA 10/100 card. it used to work, until I put more memory and a new harddrive into the computer. like I was saying, even after putting the memory and harddrive in, when booting from the LiveCD, it would crash the network, and just not work (even though ifconfig showed it working), until I ran net-setup.
The network setup is:
Code: | iface_eth0="192.168.3.123 broadcast 192.168.3.255 netmask 255.255.255.0"
gateway="eth0/192.168.3.254"
|
the frustrating thing... even if I try setting up net.eth0 to run from the LiveCD, same results... only with net-setup does it work (and only when I manually put the correct IP address in... no dynamic IP (which is fine)
I know I'm rambling... but I've been working on this for a week now, and still no closer. |

The above ifconfig is when youve booted using the livecd or normally? _________________ The realOTW: http://forums.realotw.org/index.php

ok... this is getting really frustrating...
I got the network up... but I don't know what I did... didn't change anything, I unplugged my PCMCIA card, and plugged it into a different slot, and restarted the /etc/init.d/net.eth0 and it worked... after emerging some programs, I rebooted the computer, and haven't been able to get it to work since... tried the same thing... changing the PCMCIA card slot, restarting the network, anything I could think of, and it won't come back on again... the config I showed is correct, because it did work... somehow...
I can't for the life of me figure out what I did differently that time from any other time.
all network tests that I have to run work... but when I actually try a ping (or anything else to see another computer) I just get 100% packet loss... |

Curious. Do you have hotplug set to start at the default run level? _________________ The realOTW: http://forums.realotw.org/index.php

ok... figured it out part-way...
It's not the card or the drivers, it's my new memory. I just put 2 128MB memory chips into the laptop, and that's where the conflict is coming from. I have done numerous tests... and from what I can tell, if I have no extra ram (only system standard 32MB) or I have either memory chip in either memory slot (but only using 1 chip), everything works. BUT if I put both memory chips in both slots at the same time, it doesn't work. Somehow the LiveCD fixes this problem when it starts, but have no idea why it's not working when I reguallerly boot... are there any ideas on why 2 memory chips + my network card can't all work together?
is there some setting that I need to put into the Kernel that would fix this.
Thank you |
