things take forever to load apps under kde

So, i'm running kde 3.3 and latest x.org. But for some really wierd reason things just take FOREVER to load. Sometimes after using my laptop for a good half hour, i would try to open a terminal, and the thing would just take forever, meanwhile, i wouldnt be able to do anything else, i would be able to move the mouse, but otherwise the system is just unresponsive....i would just have that bouncing konsole icon, and the screen wouldnt refresh, so i have these "trails" left from moving the mouse

I'm runing kernel 2.6.8r8 (gentoo dev sources)

It's not the famous misconfigured /etc/hosts, is it?
