Alright so I did a stage3 install with a custom (menuconfig) kernel (also, no internet so no extra modules... yet need wifi first). Now, when it boots up, it goes through grub and then the screen is just black with a cursor.

I have 1 drive. It's on SATA. I have the kernel name right on grub and.. ya

here is my gurb file

default 0
timeout 10
splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
title=Gentoo Linux 2.6.7-r11
root (hd0,0)
kernel /kernel-2.6.7-gentoo-r11 root=/dev/sda3

I also did it iwth all (sd0,0)'s but the splashiage didnt show up. and when I did that there was no smace between "root" and "(sd0,0)"

Before the screen goes blank it showstext that disappreas too quick for me to read.

What could be causing this blankness.

Same thing happened to me. As an alternative, instead of using menuconfig, make and install the kernel with genkernel. It's section 7d of the gentoo handbook. That boots fine for me but of course it's probably using more memory.

Also, don't forget that you have to change your grub.conf when you use genkernel; it's in the gentoo handbook as well.

Can I just delete the kernal, config and system files in the boot and then do a genkernal and change the grub file?
if there are any other suggestions too...

Personally I'd stay away from genkernel - but, each to their own.
Looks like grub has installed o.k., otherwise you wouldn't be seeing the splash.
Did you compile SATA support into the kernel ???.
If not, try using hda3, rather than sda3. Seems like it's not finding the kernel - you will also need to update fstab to match.
Whilst you have the LiveCD booted have a look around and see what it thinks the disk is.

I'm not sure if I did SATA support. I think I did, but maybe I didn't do it right. Anyways, I have to use SATA because thats what the HDD is. I think i'll just use genkernel for now and after I get more accustomed to linux I'll probably compile my own again.

Depends on the chipset you are using - you might have purchased a SATA, but that doesn't mean it looks like a SATA to the hardware/kernel.
Try the hda3 suggestion - it won't damage your disk, and it 's quick and easy to try. You could probably even just update the grub.conf, and not do the fstab. Will get further before it falls over - give you a bit more info.

If you decide to recompile the kernel, save the old one under a different name first - or (as I do) call the new one something different, and add an entry to the conf. Either way, gives you a chance to use the previous kernel if you mess up an update.

Sounds reasonable as well - good luck whichever you choose.

alright, I'll give that a try.
After scrapping htat install and starting over with another non-genkernel install I found that I forgt SATA support and maybe some other stuff I needed. Silly me. Never even bothered to look in SCSI stuff :rolleyes:
