I've been using my Gentoo's without console mail client like forever, except on the mail server (qmail's own sendmail). The reason is that I've heard so much security problems with sendmail that I never could resolv myself to install it.

Any suggestion for a mail client on the CLI?

Thanks.

sendmail isn't dangerous, you just need to have really good SMTP authentication stuff and good IPTABLES rules.

Does mutt include a sendmail wrapper? My main objective is to enable cron jobs to send mails. I have no use for using mails on the console when I have evolution running on the graphic console.

Also...
Quote:
# emerge -pv sendmail

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[blocks B ] mail-mta/ssmtp ("virtual/mta" from pkg mail-mta/sendmail-8.12.11-r3)
[ebuild N ] mail-mta/sendmail-8.12.11-r3 +ldap -mailwrapper -mbox -milter -sasl +ssl +tcpd 1,854 kB
[ebuild N ] mail-filter/procmail-3.22-r6 221 kB

Total size of downloads: 2,076 kB
What is procmail? From the category, I see it's some kind of mail filter, but I don't need that, or do I?

And ssmtp is blocked. I find this complicated. I just want cron to send mails, nothing more.

ADDED:

I think what I want is ssmtp, which (according to this) includes the following files:
Quote:
etc/ssmtp/revaliases
usr/lib/sendmail
usr/sbin/mailq
usr/sbin/newaliases
usr/sbin/sendmail
usr/sbin/ssmtp
usr/share/doc/ssmtp/CHANGELOG_OLD.gz
usr/share/doc/ssmtp/README
usr/share/doc/ssmtp/README.Debian
usr/share/doc/ssmtp/changelog.gz
usr/share/doc/ssmtp/copyright
usr/share/man/man8/mailq.8.gz
usr/share/man/man8/newaliases.8.gz
usr/share/man/man8/sendmail.8.gz
usr/share/man/man8/ssmtp.8.gz

ssmtp is blocked because you can only use ONE mta (i.e. either ssmtp or sendmail or postfix or courier or exim or ...). procmail is a filtering tool which lets you write recipes on header and/or content to deliver it to appropriate mail folders
