Hi all,
Whilst trying to emerge gnome and kde (and anything else big), I've been getting segmentation errors.

After doing some reading, I checked to see how hot the CPU is- and indeed, it does get too damned hot whilst compiling (70 degrees C has been reached).

So, OK, I need a better fan and thermal paste, but is there anything I can do settings wise to lower the load on my poor T-bird 1.3 athlon? Even if it slows down compilation- better than having to be switched off and try again.

Try CPU scaling (it may be difficult to make it work on a Desktop CPU). See this thread and others:
