Ok please don't ask me why, but for some reason I did the following stupid mistake:

Code:
rm -rf /etc/devfs.d

:oops:

Now I get the following error message at boot:

Quote:

* Starting devfsd...
Started device management daemon v1.3.25 for /dev
error opening file: "/etc/devfs.d" No such file or directory [!!]

* Activating (possible) swap... [OK]
* Remounting root filesystem read-only (if neccessary) ... [OK]
* Cecking root filesystem...

Failed to open device '/dev/hde3': No such file or directory

warning...fsck.reiserfs for device dev/hde3 exited with signal 6.
*Filesystem couldn't be fixed :( [!!]

Give root password for maintance
or type Control-D for normal startup:

I can use knoppix to get a working system, so that's what i did. Everything's ok there...
But how do I restore /etc/devfs.d now? What do I need to do to get my old system to boot again? I tried just creating a directory /etc/devfs.d, but that didn't do anything...
Please help!

Thx

If you're on linux 2.6, I think you should emerge udev, emerge -C devfsd and remove "/dev file system support" in the kernel config

HMm do I have to do that?

Well if udev is better anyways...
I could give it a try unless there is an easier solution

and you could also set RC_DEVICE_TARBALL to no in /etc/conf.d/rc if you want a cleaner /dev. RC_DEVFSD_STARTUP should also be set to no to make sure It doesn't try to use devfs... (instead of all this i think you could just run emerge --oneshot devfsd)
