|

Hi,
I've got a major problem. Last night, my isp went down for an hour due to maintenance (unexpectedly). When the network came back up, I was having sporadic network ability... like I could go to google.com, but shortly after, no matter where I went, I got the same error: "Connection Refused". I could still ping any ip, but I couldn't even access Google.
One thing that seemed to work was to delete the /var/run/dhcpcd-eth0.pid, but that only worked for 5 minutes.
How can I get back on the net? Thx!
[edit: I should also mention that my other gentoo box has the same problem, but neither my uncle's win98 nor his xp have any problem]

Try to set up your own DNS caching server. emerge powerdns or bind. It worked for me, I have got ADSL, and my provider has very poor DNS server (probably, its offline often). _________________ Registered Linux user number 369644

thanks, I'll check into that, sound slike a good idea.
However, I'd still like to know why it is that the windows machines work just fine while both gentoos (which have significant differences) are fuxored.
Let me add how far the isp support people got me. They gave me an ip to a nameserver outside of my router to put at the top of /etc/resolv.conf (instead of 192.168.0.1), and this seems to work pretty well--at least until I reboot. I would be satisfied with finding a way to make sure the external dns address doesn't get overwritten with the router, but I am curious and would like to learn why the router craps out on gentoo.
Thanks. |
