|
|
I have a HP Printer-Copier-Scanner multifunction device, it used to work beutifully under windows (after installing 100Mb of stuff) and used to work under Linux but at some point it has stopped, I dont print very often...
I can print normal text documents perfectly but any images the colours seems really pathetic, with blue's printing almost black and most else being really dull.
I suspect it could be some sort of conversion going on in my drivers somewhere and a perfect example of it is shown during the cups test page, the coloured gradients, and especially the black one is banded, like intead of going white-black it will go black-white-black if that makes sense?
I hope someone has an idea because it is really frustrating, not to mention, why are the ebuilds for hpijs so out of date? the latest masked version is 1.6.1 but they are now up to 1.7.1.
here is an image showing what I mean.. [img:ba07c54e1f]http://www.burkeez.com/hpoj_problem.jpeg[/img:ba07c54e1f] |

try reinstalling the drivers. Have you done anything weird to cups or hpijs since your original installation? Done an emerge -u world or anything like that? |

yes, I regularly emerge -u world...
I can try a re-emerge of the drivers then and see how it goes, should I first remove the printer and driver then emerge and setup again? |

Ok, what I done was delete the printer from cups, unmerge hpoj and hpijs, then i emerged hpoj, setup cups and printed, almost perfect!
Colours are all correct but the page seems a little to the side and top rather than centred, this is using A4 page setup, which is correct.
Would be nice to know it is printing on the page properly, but even this is progress! |

Ok, I was a bit wrong.. lol
The Cups test page, the quality and banding are good, but the colours... all are correct except "blue" which prints as a purple colour! It was doing this before aswell if you refer to the scanned image a coupple of posts up.
What on earth could that be? maybe an incorrect ppd file? Even though I dont think I specified one for it. |

Sometimes it's the simple things. if the printer is printing...it's probably not the driver. have you checked your ink levels lately? sounds like you've run out of red or yellow? |

Sadly I dont think it is.. new cartridges, but I might do a headclean and pop an SD card in from the camera to get the printer to do it's own printout, at least that will isolate it as either the printer or the driver hey.. or more likely dodgy harvey norman's cartridges grrr..
I will post back my results tomorrow, too tired tonight but thanks for the help so far mate. Sometimes it just helps to voice things out load and have someone rebound the basics... funny how when it comes to ones own problems we tend to forget the basics. ![Very Happy :-D](images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) |

Well, I put a photo on the scanner, hit colour copy on the printers front panel and it copied perfectly, another test print from KDE and it is still incorrect!!!
This is driving me nut, I might try emergeing hpijs and re-setup cups, something MUST be wrong in the last filter or or ps encapsulation, black always prints fine, the rest of the image I tested is fine except for the blue area, which printed as pink. |

Ok, for any who are interested, the solution was in my ppd file, sort of.. the hpoj drivers only install a generic hp new deskjet driver which evidently does not work properly with the PSC series.
To fix it emerge hpijs, like..
Code: |
USE="ppds" emerge hpijs
/etc/init.d/cupsd restart
|
Then point your browser to localhost:631 and add the printer, select the ptal: entry then HP, then the printer that closely matches yours.. mine is a PSC2310 so I picked the PSC2300
Now I just need to work out why my digital photo's print out a little bit too jaggy! 3.2Mp IXUS II printed on a normal photo card seems a bit too jaggy for me, I have seen it print much better before, either direct from SD or from Windows. |

yay for solutions!
if you don't want to run into this error all the time, make sure ppds is in your USE variables unter /etc/make.profile/make.default too. i have a psc 1210, and i had a difficult time getting it to work, but nothing like that. i installed it using kcontrol, not cups, and it seemed to recognize it well as a usb printer. |
