I'm hoping to solicit some feedback as to why my Gentoo box might unexpectedly shut down. I've reviewed my logfiles and haven't found anything indicating what might have caused the problem - just normal activity and then all the sudden all the start-up sequence logs from when I flip the power back on. It's happened a few times over the last few weeks and I'm not even sure where to begin. My box is basically just working as a personal apache server with ssh for remote administration. I've seen a lot of ssh port scanning and attempted logins lately, but that seems more annoying than anything else, as all default accounts have been shut off and passwords are complicated. I actively pursue good security policies and am reasonably confident that my box hasn't been compromised. I guess I'm most interested in some ideas of where to start looking for evidence of what is causing the problem - power saving features gone awry or kernel issues possibly?
Running: Linux 2.4.27 #3 SMP Wed Oct 6 23:06:54 EDT 2004 i686 Pentium II (Deschutes) GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
USE="-X -kde -gnome -quicktime -cups -qt -svga apache2 jpeg mysql -postgres png samba ssl tiff usb gd -offensive imagemagick exif php perl"
Only inbound services open on my firewall are port 22, 80, and 443.
Not even sure what else to paste in here - more than happy to provide more information if anyone has some ideas of where to start looking... |

Unexpected reboots without any other symptom are usually related to faulty hardware. I would point to the power supply as the primary suspect, followed by overheat of components in the motherboard. Try running it cooler or possibly swap the power supply with another box.
