I would like to install the gnome-volume-manager but when I issue an 'emerge -pv gnome-volume-manager' command I get the following:
Code:
darkhorse # emerge -pv gnome-volume-manager

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[blocks B     ] sys-kernel/linux-headers (from pkg sys-kernel/linux26-headers-2.6.8.1-r1)
[ebuild  N    ] dev-python/pyrex-0.9.3  171 kB
[ebuild  N    ] sys-apps/dbus-0.22-r1  +X -debug +gtk -mono +python +xml2 1,219 kB
[ebuild  N    ] sys-fs/udev-042  371 kB
[ebuild  N    ] sys-kernel/linux26-headers-2.6.8.1-r1  -build 34,793 kB
[ebuild  N    ] sys-apps/hal-0.2.98-r1  -debug 1,193 kB
[ebuild  N    ] gnome-base/gnome-volume-manager-1.0.2-r1  -debug 176 kB

Total size of downloads: 37,925 kB

Is there a conflict with the 2.6.9 r1 kernel which I am using and the gnome-volume-manager? Is there a way to safely install around this? Is this even a kernel problem?
Code:
darkhorse # emerge gnome-volume-manager
Calculating dependencies ...done!

!!! Error: the sys-kernel/linux-headers package conflicts with another package.
!!!        both can't be installed on the same system together.
!!!        Please use 'emerge --pretend' to determine blockers.

It's not a conflict with your kernel version, just the kernel-headers.

You just hava to use kernel-header26 instead of the 24 series.

If you follow the Redeeman's how-to in this link

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=185508

you'll get the spirit...

Thanks,

I would never have thought the a system built using the 2.6 kernel (and never having a 2.4 kernel on it) would have the 2.4 kernel headers...and disallow the installation of the 2.6 ones...
...hopefully this will be a safe and sane install of the GVM from here.
