Forgive me if this is not a valid question, hoping I got it in the right place. However, I recently installed gentoo on a computer with a 266mhz Pentium II processor and it has 64mb of ram. The video card is an ATI Technologies Inc 3D Rage Pro AGP 1X/2X (rev 5c) according to lspci, which sounds about right. I was wondering if it would be practical to install X with the Gnome environment, considering the limited amount of processing power. Any opinion would help greatly. |

I would recommend a smaller window manager instead of the Gnome environment. Openbox, Blackbox, and Fluxbox come to mind but, there are others. _________________ The true guru is a teacher.

Thankyou very much, being used to only Gnome or KDE I forgot all about the others. Yeah, all I really want to do is be able to use terminal windows more easily and be able to run a few small graphical apps. Thanks again! |

You might want to consider using XFCE 4. It's a full desktop environment that uses GTK, so you can use GNOME apps in XFCE without any theme mismatch, but it's not as heavy as GNOME. You can also use Openbox; it's lighter than Fluxbox. |
