did you install the entire 32 bit JRE or just use the plugin with the 64 bit JRE? |

welp.. wasn't 64 bit JRE as that didn't work
edit: extracting 32 bit JRE to /opt/sun-jre-1.5.0/ didn't work either...
could you please explain in more detail how you got this to work? |

Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle. Look there on that site - there is a Sun J2RE 1.5 for AMD64!
Suppose we should report that to the portage guys and get them on it?
...on second thought, that doesn't get us anywhere. We need 32-bit. I'm trying it now. |

Oh yeah, it worked!
Note to above: I couldn't extract the 32-bit 1.4.2 from Sun's site either (from www.java.com) - you have to get 1.5.0 from www.sun.com for this trick to work.
Awesome awesome awesome! |

AWESOME! It worked. I was copying the plugin before rather than linking it. Also, I'd renamed the directory to sun-jre-1.5.0... one of these must have been the problem. Thanks a bunch! |

something else I noticed: if you install another jdk/jre in addition (i.e. have a 64 bit blackdown and 32 bit sun java for firefox-bin 32 bit), the symlink to the plugin disappears when you install that other jdk/jre |
