I emerged blender, and it will not execute, and when I try to run it from the terminal, here's what I get:
tobi@Gentoo tobi $ blender
guessing 'blender' == '/usr/bin/blender'
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
ERROR: Unable to open Blender window

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

You must have OpenGL working for blender. Test it with "glxinfo".

furthermore, you need the line

Load "glx"

between lines

Section "Module"
...
...
EndSection

in the XF86Config file, which is somewhere around /etc/X11/
If your video card is nVIDIA based, it has a perfect readme and mini-howto in nVIDIA`s site and www.tldp.org. What is your video card.

I could help more, if I just could login to my brand new amd64 gentoo, my first ever gentoo... I`ve changed root passwd during first installation steps and on first reboot, can`t login :D... Remembering old days...

Oh, and my video card is an ATi Rage 128 Pro.
The monitor is a wicked 17" LG Flatron, thought you might like to know. (1280x1024)(28-82, 40, 60)
X.org 6.8.0, KDE 3.3.1...

Most probabply, you are not using your ATI`s (native) drivers, instead you are on vesa mode (framebuffer). You need ati drivers. Any ati user can point the solution more directly.

If you install the instructions below, or most important on ATIs site (there should be, or at least in driver package), your problem should be solved

1.) copy /etc/X11/xorg.conf.example to /etc/X11/xorg.conf
2.) make sure you have 'load "glx"' in module section
3.) edit file to fit your system, mouse, keyboard etc.
4.) in section "device" , set "Driver" to what it should be (according to ati)

after this, if you can make x work, blender and such applications will work.

Good luck!

I went into the /etc/X11/xorg.conf and uncommented
Code:
Load "glx"
and when I restarted X, blender ran fine! Thank you.
