I've seen a bunch of posts about nvidia driver problems, and I've read all I've found, but havent found any solution.
I actually installed gentoo on this computer a few weeks ago (and did it again now after being foolish enough to use partition magic to move a ext3 partition.. ;) ) and there was no problems then..
Anyway, I followed the nvidia guide in the gentoo handbook, but can't get things working. I have tried the following steps with kernel 2.6.9-gentoo-r1 and both the x86 and ~x86 masked packages: x11-base/opengl-update media-video/nvidia-kernel media-video/nvidia-glx , with the same result:
Code:
rungu root # modprobe nvidia
rungu root # modules-update
rungu root # opengl-update nvidia
 * Switching to nvidia OpenGL interface...                                [ ok ]
rungu hadoque # glxinfo | grep direct

When I try starting x with the nvidia driver added in xorg.conf, i get a black screen. I don't find any significant error messages is the xog log, but here it is anyway:

witch version of nvidia-kernel do you use?

i'm using
Code:

*  media-video/nvidia-kernel
      Latest version available: 1.0.6111-r2
      Latest version installed: 1.0.6111-r2
Size of downloaded files: 15,138 kB
      Homepage:    http://www.nvidia.com/
Description: Linux kernel module for the NVIDIA X11 driver
      License:     NVIDIA

with no problems

I had the same problem as you. What I did was to unmerge the drivers and download the Linux nvidia drivers directly from nvidia.com and have it compile a custom nvidia module that way. Then I ran opengl-update nvidia, rebooted and started X and it worked like a charm. For some reason the emerged nvidia drivers didn't work for me, but the exact same version from nvidia did. Still not sure why, though.

none of the suggested solutions worked for me (I take changing nvidia-kernel to 1.0.6111-r2 as a solution), the downloaded nvidia driver couldn't find the kernel source folder, even when I supplied it.... However, I got things working by changing to kernel 2.6.8-gentoo-r9.
Thanks for the help.

hi,

to G2k : don't know if its related but when using nvidia card the following line is not needed and may cause trouble :
Quote:

Hi,

to hadoque : it seems your version of nvidia glx is not correct, try :
Code:
emerge nvidia-glx

then
Code:
opengl-update

actually, I'm getting more errors by disabling that (in fluxbox, xine, etc.) I'm starting to hate OpenGL...why doesn't it just...work

ok i got it to work.
I added
Code:
Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "true"
to my Section "Screen", then I added the following line to /etc/security/console.perms
Code:
<xconsole> 0666 <dri>        0600.root
and finally ran
Code:
chmod 0666 /dev/nvidia* && chown root /dev/nvidia*

Hello.
I am having a somewhat similiar problem.

All seemed to start when I emerged a new opengl-update (probably opengl-update-2.1_pre7, I'm not sure). What alerted me was that Enemy Territory stopped working, but X was starting normally. When I run glxinfo I get a lot of:

Code:

name of display: :0.0
Xlib:  extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib:  extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib:  extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual

glxgears returns a:
Code:

Xlib:  extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
glxgears: Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual.

and i can see this in Xorg.0.log:

Code:

(II) Loading extension NV-GLX
(II) NVIDIA(0): NVIDIA 3D Acceleration Architecture Initialized
(II) NVIDIA(0): Using the NVIDIA 2D acceleration architecture
(==) NVIDIA(0): Backing store disabled
(==) NVIDIA(0): Silken mouse enabled
(II) Loading extension NV-CONTROL
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to load GLX

I tried these steps:
Code:
emerge -C nvidia-glx
emerge -C nvidia-kernel
rm /lib/modules/2.6.8-gentoo-r3/video/nvidia.ko
emerge nvidia-glx
update-modules
opengl-update nvidia

but to no avail. Also tried to recompile kernel... but always the same. Can anyone help?
Thanks

EDIT: also, when I do lsmod, I get:

Code:

Module                  Size  Used by
nvidia               3464476  -

Is the ' - ' strange?

just "emerge --sync && emerge opengl-update"

then "opengl-update nvidia" (your vcard driver)

What did you chown?

in /etc/group put for example video:x:27:root,<your user> and it should work.

leave what I wrote above in your /etc/group, it can't hurt. Edit "/etc/security/console.perms" and remove the line that starts with "<dri>". Then do a
Code:
chmod 0666 /dev/nvidia* && chown root /dev/nvidia*
Then log out of X if you were in it and log back in. Hope this helps

do you have all the latest nvidia drivers? as of today (3/10/05) that would be media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.6629-r4 and media-video/nvidia-glx-1.0.6629-r5. If you have an old version do
Code:
echo "media-video/nvidia-kernel" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords
echo "media-video/nvidia-glx" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords
then emerge them and `opengl-update nvidia`. Not sure what else it could be...or how to go about fixing it. You should check out the Nvidia documentation, it might help you.

If you get the following errors when using glxinfo and glxgears:

Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual
glxgears: Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual.

Then follow the directions below.

This problem seems to be fixed when you emerge the following:
nvidia-glx
nvidia-kernel
nvidia-settings
emul-linux-x86-nvidia
and then just do the following:
(Follow the directions from http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/nvidia-guide.xml)
modprobe nvidia
update-modules
opengl-update nvidia
