Mail in linux is confusing me a bit. I have 3 mail accounts. I can ssh into one of them. I have a machine of mine colocated on a nice connection that I can ssh into. I have my desktop on a private lan. I have the gateway machine.

I would like to be able to check all my mail through the internet with a non web interface and one set of spam and filters.. Ssh would be fine. I would like this to be as secure as possible, obviously.

I could pull everything to one of my boxes, and run procmail and pine into that. However, I could have all my mail forwarded to the mail account I can ssh into. I can run procmail on that, and then check through pine. The sshable email account already has a webmail interface.

I guess what my question is that I would like some mail gurus to let me know what they think.

right now, the colocated box has a static public ip and it runs apache, and I just hit it via the static ip. it also serves as a file server. being without a valid domainname I can't run a mailserver because most mail servers with reject the mail without a valid reverse dns lookup, right?

perhaps I could download all my mail to this coloco box, mess with it through filters and such, and then ssh it back to the sshable mail account? or I could even skip the ssh back as I could just use the smtp of whichever mail I want.
