I cannot find a very simple answer to a very simple question:
How do I permanently set an environment variable?????
I know I can export but that's temporary.....
I've had people point me to my local hiddne bash file but I do NOT have one.....
how is this done???? |

hi
it is a bit different if you wan't to set a variable permanent for all users you can set it in /etc/profile
or if you wan't to set it for s specific user you can add the variable in the users home directory. and there you need to know his shell so (sounds like you have bash isntalled) then you have to put it in .bashrc oder .bash_profile.
bash_profile will be read if you have logged in on a shell (e.g. via ssh oder over a virtual console)
.bashrc will be read if you just open a bash (e.g. on your X) |
