Why is ar giving me an error during gentoo-sources compile?

When the compile stops, I get "error loading shared libraries". It happens at the char device section.

Here are the prominent lines:

ar rcs js.o
ar: error while loading shared libraries: ar: undefined symbol: bfd_openr_next_archiveD_file

That doesn't make much sense...
You can't run a command on a file that's been deleted!

I'm in a stage 3 install, pentium3 tarball.... please help!
