This may help others..My system is a dual athlon, 256M ram Geforce4 Ti4200  .. I run a basic gnome system, mozilla gentoo 2.4.20-pre11 kernel with Nvidia-kernel, Nvidia-glx ebuilds. C flags -march=athlon-mp -O3 -pipe. nothing real fancy..

My system apparently had a memory leak of some sort but I had difficulties tracking it down.. Shortly after a reboot my machine was hitting the swapfile.. and not letting it go. Run mozilla a little, open a terminal and a run a small program or 2, swap file 13%. And stay there, keep at it a little and the machine was thrashing the hard drive just to pull down the menu..

Came accross http://www.minion.de/nvidia.html. Downloaded the NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-3123-pa.diff (bottom of page), and the Latest Nvidia kernel driver.. Applied patch, make, make install, reboot... My system running much snapper, no more swapping. Not exactly sure what it did, but it may help you too... :?:
